Escalator II

A while after I made the escalator I realized that there is more than the three parts in the finished piece. There is rock!
So I sat down and tried this and that. And I stopped. I didn't sound right. The idea needed to mature for more than two years until the structure apeared. Then it took another year to elaborate, to tune, to tweak, to tweak again. Finally, I decided to stop. That's it! Listen and enjoy!

Networking

The piano track evolved some time ago. But it felt incomplete; something seemed to be missing.
Then one day I stood in a crowd of people talking to each other. For a moment I was just an observer of the scene. A person talked to a group, left and went on to others starting a new conversation. There was a steady moving in the crowd, a constant mixing. The voices melted together to a special kind of noise waving around and around. One moment this noise seemed to ebb away, giving room to single voices before they ceased again into an ocean of sounds.
This is what the piano was talking about.

Traveling Theme III

A while ago I started recording sketches of music that deal with traveling. It happened that number three became a round thing first. And this is largely due to the great sound of a rather simple virtual analogue synthesizer named Podolski.
The base sequence of the Podolski runs through the whole piece. It captures nicely the tension between calm and rush, between slowness and speed which one can experience during an airplane travel.

Waking up

Time flows constantly. Although if I sleep everything seems slower, even the travel of the seconds hand. Waking up means adjusting again to the generic pace of things. For some of us this takes just a blink of an eye. For others, including myself it is a process that takes a while.

Escalator

5.1 Surround Sound Test Download

This piece is based on the sound of an escalator. Actually, it was a conveyor at an air port but the word escalator sounds better. The sound appears in the music in different ways. In the first part it is close to natural and the technical sound is contrasted by classical strings. In the second part a granular filter creates a special atmosphere. Finally, the filtered sound reappears at the end closing a meditative sequence.

Escalator is my first serious surround mix after a quite some experiments. So please forgive me the flaws.
For those who do not have a chance to listen to 5.1 music there is a stereo mix which, of course, lacks some features of the surround mix. But it is a good representation the sound.

Whistle the night

Dolby 5.1 surround sound test

It is a joke rather than a serious piece of music.
Knowing that I use various sounds to make music friends made me a special birthday gift: a blue plastic whistle. Encouraged by this generous gift I started to think about how to prepare a piece of musicwhich exclusively uses sounds of the whistle without the actual whistle sound ever appearing. The process of preparation of 'whistle the night' was a training for using Native Instruments Kontakt and Reaktor software. And I made my first experiments with composing and mixing surround music.

All in all it took me almost one year to finish it. At the end I had almost forgotten how the sounds and instruments were created. In order to remind me and to show it to you I made a small movie. Please see the 'Making of ' video below.
